Ironman Lanzarote

Considered one of the toughest Ironman races, Ironman Lanzarote has almost 900 registered athletes

The 16th edition of the Ironman Lanzarote Canarias Triathlon on May 19 has 860 registered competitors, of which 77 are women. There are 18 pros in the field so far, including seven women. The women are led by last year's runner up Tiina Boman, from Finland, and Canada's Tara Norton.

In the men's pro field, Belgian's Luc Van Lierde, the two time Ford Ironman World Champion and course record holder in Kona, will take on last year's fifth place finisher in Hawaii, Eneko Llanos Burguear from Spain and last year's runner up in Lanzarote, Steffen Liebetrau.

So far, athletes from 33 different countries have registered for the race.

Ironman Lanzarote has long been considered one of the toughest courses on the Ironman circuit. "Normal limits do not apply," is the race motto, and the heat, high winds and challenging bike course that winds up and down two mountains all make for a challenging day.

As challenging as the course is, it is also incredibly beautiful, too. The view from the top of Mirador del Rio, the second mountain, is one that won't soon be forgotten by any of the races competitors.
